The prints have a powerful, three-dimensional quality. While earlier works allowed the viewer to visually step into the frame and decipher the words and phrases at each layer, Debevoise's latest works are more challenging. He says the works are still decipherable (except the etchings), but that ambiguities of meaning and sequencing can develop as the viewer tries to decide which layer goes where, and in what order. It is a purposeful attempt by the artist to push the viewer into seeing things differently.
"I think art is basically communication," Debevoise said. "But words don't always add up to one coherent statement. When you look at my art, I want you to see what it means to you. It's a field to explore for meaning."
